An Honest Review of Agronomic Lawn Management from a Local Competitor
If you’re looking into lawn care companies in Hampton Roads, you’ve probably come across Agronomic Lawn Management (ALM). They’ve been serving southeastern Virginia since 1998 and have earned a solid reputation.
We’re Meadow Lawn & Pest, and yes, we’re a competitor. So why are we writing a review of ALM?
We believe you deserve honest, accurate information from people who understand the lawn care industry. We know what good lawn care looks like, and we recognize what ALM does well. We also see where their approach has limits, just as ours does.
We’ll give you a clear breakdown of ALM’s strengths, weaknesses, and which homeowners they serve best. We’ll be fair, stick to the facts, and point out where we do things differently.
Company Overview: Who Is ALM?
Agronomic Lawn Management was founded in 1998 by Craig Zeigler and is headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia, with an additional location in Suffolk. The company specializes in lawn fertilization and weed control for residential properties across the Southside of Hampton Roads.
ALM’s tagline is “We Grow, We Don’t Mow,” which tells you exactly what they focus on: the health and treatment side of lawn care, not mowing or general landscaping.
They are BBB accredited, hold a Virginia State Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services license, and have built a team of 51 to 200 employees over their 27 years in business.
Their core values center on two things: education and service. Every member of ALM’s service staff participates in training courses taught by Virginia Tech’s Turfgrass Management department, and the company is a proud member of the Virginia Turfgrass Council.
ALM’s Strengths
To be direct: ALM is a good company, and there are several areas where they genuinely excel.
1. Deep Experience and Proven Track Record
ALM has been in business since 1998. That’s over 27 years of serving Hampton Roads lawns. In an industry where companies come and go, that kind of longevity says something real about their consistency.
For context, we started Meadow Lawn & Pest in 2008. ALM has a full decade head start on us, and we respect that. But 17 years is nothing to dismiss either. We’ve been through plenty of growing seasons, drought years, wet years, and everything Hampton Roads weather can throw at a lawn. We deliver the same caliber of results—we’ve just been doing it for fewer years.
Experience matters, but so does the quality of training, the scope of services, and the results your lawn actually gets. ALM’s track record is impressive. Ours is building quickly, and our 4.9-star Google rating with nearly 500 reviews shows our customers see the results.
2. Outstanding Customer Reputation
ALM maintains a 4.9-star rating on Google with over 2,500 reviews. That is an exceptional number of reviews for a local lawn care company, and maintaining a 4.9 average at that volume is genuinely impressive.
They also carry a 4.8-star rating on Birdeye with over 1,200 reviews. When you read their reviews, common themes emerge: customers consistently praise the knowledge and professionalism of their technicians, the quality of communication before and after treatments, and visible results over time. Multiple reviewers mention specific technicians by name, which tells you that ALM builds real relationships between their route managers and customers.
3. Virginia Tech-Trained Staff
This is one of ALM’s biggest differences. Their whole service staff takes training courses taught by professors from Virginia Tech’s Turfgrass Management department. This is not just a weekend seminar or an online certificate. It’s ongoing education from one of the top turfgrass programs in the country.
At Meadow Lawn & Pest, we take a different but equally rigorous approach. We have multiple Virginia Tech Certified Turfgrass Professionals (CTPs) on staff overseeing our turf services. The CTP designation is an extensive certification program administered by Virginia Tech that requires candidates to demonstrate advanced knowledge in turfgrass science, soil management, pest identification, and integrated pest management.
It doesn’t stop at initial certification either—CTPs must meet annual recertification requirements, including continuing education, to maintain their credential. This ensures our certified professionals stay current with the latest research, products, and best practices every single year.
ALM trains their entire staff through Virginia Tech courses, which is commendable. Our approach puts Virginia Tech-certified professionals in leadership roles overseeing every turf program we offer. Both models create knowledgeable service, but the CTP certification is a formal, ongoing credential with built-in accountability, not just a one-time training course.
4. Well-Structured Program Tiers
ALM offers clearly defined program tiers for cool-season (fescue) lawns:
Fairway Program — Their foundation program with 7 annual treatments, including pre- and post-emergent weed control, granular fertilization, and lime treatment.
PGA Program — Includes everything in the Fairway program plus 2 additional treatments and sedge control. This is a solid mid-tier option for lawns that need a little more attention.
Master’s Program — Their most comprehensive offering. Includes everything in the Fairway program plus 7 additional treatments: sedge control, fungicide applications, and grub control. This is a 14-treatment program that covers most lawn health concerns.
Warm Season Program — A separate 7-treatment program designed specifically for Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine grasses, with sedge control and fungicide treatments available as add-ons.
This tiered structure helps homeowners pick the level of care that fits their lawn’s needs and budget. The names are clever too, since both golfers and non-golfers can follow the progression from Fairway to PGA to Master’s.
5. Slit Seeding Expertise
For lawn renovation and overseeding, ALM uses slit seeding. This method uses a specialized machine to cut small grooves in the soil and deposit seed directly into them. The result is excellent seed-to-soil contact, which typically produces high germination rates, often 80 to 90 percent under good conditions.
If your primary concern is getting new grass established quickly and your soil structure is in decent shape, slit seeding is a highly effective method. ALM has been doing it for over two decades and has clearly refined their process.
It’s important to note that ALM’s seeding and aeration services are only available as add-ons to their lawn care programs, not as separate services.
6. Environmental Certifications
ALM participates in two notable environmental programs:
Virginia DCR Green and Clean Initiative — This is a documented environmental commitment with measurable standards for responsible lawn care practices. We participate in this program too, and we think it’s important.
Chesapeake Bay Businesses for the Bay (B4B) — This is an additional voluntary program where ALM takes measurable actions to support the protection and restoration of the Chesapeake Bay. This is a credential we don’t currently hold, and it demonstrates a genuine environmental commitment.
7. Broader Southside Service Area
ALM serves a wide area across the Southside of Hampton Roads, including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Carrollton, and Moyock, North Carolina. If you live in Virginia Beach or Norfolk, ALM is one of your strongest local options for professional lawn fertilization and weed control—we don’t currently serve those areas.
8. Soil Testing Requirement
ALM requires a soil test before starting any lawn care program. While this might seem like an extra step, it’s actually a smart practice. Testing your soil’s pH and nutrient levels before treatments means their programs are based on real data, not guesswork.
We include free soil testing for all turf program customers at Meadow Lawn & Pest. The difference is that ALM treats it as a requirement, which ensures every single customer starts with a data-driven approach. That’s a smart policy.
9. Strong Satisfaction Guarantee
ALM offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee with free re-treatments between scheduled appointments if you’re not happy with results. This is a meaningful commitment that shows confidence in their service.
ALM’s Weaknesses and Limitations
No company is perfect, and it’s important to be honest about limitations as well as strengths. Here’s where ALM falls short.
1. Limited Service Scope
This is the most significant limitation. ALM specializes in lawn fertilization and weed control, along with tree and shrub care, seeding, and outdoor pest control for mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks. That’s their focus, and they do it well.
However, ALM does not offer:
- Irrigation repair, maintenance, winterization, or backflow testing
- Landscape bed maintenance, mulch, or decorative rock installation
- Indoor pest control
- French drain or drainage solutions
- Landscape lighting (permanent or holiday)
- Mole, vole, or armyworm-specific treatments
- Tree and shrub planting
- Perimeter pest control for general household pests
If you need any of these services, you’ll have to hire other companies. For homeowners who want one trusted provider for everything, this can make things complicated. You’ll end up with different companies, schedules, and bills.
At Meadow Lawn & Pest, we handle all of these services under one roof. That’s our biggest differentiator, and it’s the primary reason some homeowners choose us over ALM.
2. No Irrigation Services
Your irrigation system directly affects the results of any fertilization program. If sprinkler heads are misaligned, zones aren’t timed correctly, or there are leaks underground, even the best lawn treatments will underperform.
ALM doesn’t diagnose or repair irrigation problems. If their technicians see an irrigation issue with your lawn, you’ll need to call a separate irrigation company to fix it. This gap between finding the problem and solving it can cost you time and results.
3. No Interior Pest Control
ALM offers outdoor pest control for mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks, which is great for keeping your yard comfortable during warm months. However, they don’t provide interior pest control. If ants, spiders, roaches, or other pests make it past your outdoor perimeter, you’ll need a separate pest control company to handle them inside your home.
4. No Drainage Solutions
Standing water and poor drainage are common problems in Hampton Roads due to our low-lying geography and clay-heavy soils. Poor drainage can lead to lawn diseases, mosquito breeding, and even foundation damage over time.
ALM’s fertilization programs can help your lawn’s health, but they can’t fix drainage problems. They don’t offer French drain installation or other drainage solutions, so you’ll need another contractor for that.
5. Slit Seeding Doesn’t Address Soil Compaction
ALM’s primary overseeding method is slit seeding, and as noted above, it’s effective at getting seeds to germinate. However, slit seeding doesn’t address soil compaction, which is one of the most common underlying problems for established lawns in Hampton Roads.
Compacted soil restricts root growth, reduces water infiltration, and limits nutrient uptake. If your lawn’s soil is compacted (and after years of foot traffic, mowing, and our heavy regional clay content, most are), the seed may germinate well but the grass may struggle to develop deep, healthy root systems long-term.
At Meadow, we use core aeration with overseeding instead. Core aeration pulls plugs of soil from the lawn, which relieves compaction, improves water and nutrient penetration, enhances root development, and reduces thatch buildup—all while creating ideal conditions for seed germination. It addresses the cause and the symptom at the same time.
Both methods work. But if soil compaction is an issue for your property, core aeration provides long-term structural benefits that slit seeding alone doesn’t.
6. Seeding and Aeration Only as Add-Ons
ALM’s lawn seeding and aeration services are only available as add-ons to their lawn care programs. You can’t buy slit seeding or aeration on their own. This bundled approach makes sense because seeding works best with regular fertilization. However, it means you have to sign up for a full program if you want seeding.
What Type of Homeowner Is ALM Best For?
ALM is an excellent choice if your situation matches these profiles:
You live in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, or Moyock, NC. We don’t serve these areas. ALM does, and they serve them well.
You primarily need lawn fertilization and weed control. If that’s your main concern and you already have trusted providers for irrigation, pest control, and landscaping, ALM’s specialized focus is a real advantage. They concentrate their expertise on what they do best rather than spreading across many service categories.
You want a company with maximum experience. With 27 years in business and over 2,500 Google reviews, ALM has a track record that’s hard to match. If tenure and proven volume matter most to you, ALM has the edge.
You prefer slit seeding for overseeding. If rapid germination is your primary goal and your soil structure is in good condition, ALM’s slit seeding expertise will serve you well.
You value environmental certifications. ALM’s dual participation in the Green and Clean Initiative and the Chesapeake Bay B4B program demonstrates a documented environmental commitment that goes a step beyond many competitors.
You value Virginia Tech-connected training. ALM states that their staff participates in training courses taught by Virginia Tech’s Turfgrass Management department, which is a meaningful investment in employee education. It’s worth noting, however, that this is different from holding a formal Virginia Tech Certified Turfgrass Professional (CTP) designation. ALM does not claim to have CTP-certified staff on their team. At Meadow, we have multiple CTPs on staff—a formal certification with annual recertification requirements that represents a higher level of verified, ongoing expertise. Both approaches reflect a commitment to education, but the CTP credential carries more weight as an independently verified standard.
When ALM Might Not Be the Best Fit
ALM may not be your best choice if:
You want one company for everything. If you need lawn care, irrigation, landscaping, pest control, lighting, and drainage handled by a single provider, ALM can’t do that. You’ll need to coordinate with multiple companies.
You have irrigation problems. If your sprinkler system needs repair, maintenance, or winterization, you’ll need a separate irrigation company. At Meadow, we handle irrigation in-house, which means if we spot an issue during a lawn treatment, we can fix it directly.
You need interior pest control. ALM handles mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks outdoors. For anything inside your home, you’ll need another provider.
Your soil is compacted. If you have heavy clay soil or years of compaction (common in Hampton Roads), core aeration may serve your long-term lawn health better than slit seeding alone.
You have drainage problems. Standing water, soggy areas, or poor grading need drainage solutions that ALM doesn’t offer.
You live in Hampton, Poquoson, York County, or Newport News. ALM’s primary focus is the Southside of Hampton Roads. Our service area covers these Peninsula and Western communities where we can respond quickly.
The Bottom Line
ALM is a legitimate, well-run lawn care company with nearly three decades of experience, a strong team trained by Virginia Tech, genuine environmental commitments, and thousands of satisfied customers. If their services match what your property needs, you’ll be in good hands.
Their focus on lawn fertilization and weed control is both their biggest strength and their main limitation. They do these services very well, but they don’t try to do everything. Some homeowners want that kind of specialization. Others may not want to coordinate with different contractors for irrigation, pest control, landscaping, and drainage.
At Meadow Lawn & Pest, we do things differently. We believe your property works best when one company understands everything: how irrigation affects fertilization, how drainage affects your turf, and how your landscape beds affect pest problems. That’s the complete view we provide.
But the right choice isn’t about which company is “better” overall. It’s about which company fits your property, your location, and your needs best.
Questions to Ask Before Choosing Any Lawn Care Company
Whether you’re talking to ALM, us, or anyone else, these questions will help you make a smart decision:
- What’s included in the base program price, and what costs extra?
- What should I expect to pay annually, including any add-on services my lawn will likely need?
- What happens if I’m not satisfied with results after a treatment?
- How long before I should expect to see visible improvement?
- What maintenance practices should I follow between your treatments?
- Are your technicians licensed and trained? By whom?
- Do you offer soil testing? Is it included or an additional cost?
- For overseeding, do you use core aeration, slit seeding, or both? Why?
- What services will I need that you don’t provide?
- What’s your typical response time for service calls?
That last question is more important than you might think. Both ALM and Meadow Lawn & Pest promise to have a licensed technician at your property within 48 hours of contact. At Meadow, we usually aim for next-day service because our smaller, focused service area lets us respond faster.
