Mole Activity Picks Up in Fall: What Actually Works

Short Answer: Moles become more visibly active in autumn because cooling soil brings earthworms back toward the surface, and earthworms are the bulk of a mole's diet. That last point matters: grub control alone rarely removes moles, because grubs are a minor part of what they eat. Moles are insectivores, not rodents, so rodent baits do nothing. What genuinely works is trapping in active tunnels, correctly identified. Most of the damage you see is surface feeding tunnels, and a single mole can produce a startling amount of it, which is why properties usually have far fewer moles than owners assume.
Ridged tunnels running across the lawn, small volcano shaped mounds of soil, and turf that feels spongy underfoot are the September signs. We get a run of these calls every autumn across Hampton Roads, and most of them start with the same assumption: that the yard is overrun.
Usually it is not. Understanding what you are actually dealing with saves a lot of wasted money on products that were never going to work.
Why Now
Moles are active year round and do not hibernate. What changes seasonally is depth.
Through the heat and dryness of a Tidewater summer, earthworms move deeper into cooler, moister soil, and moles follow them down. Their tunneling continues but it happens well below the surface where you cannot see it.
As autumn cools and moisture returns, earthworms come back up toward the surface layers. Moles follow, and their feeding tunnels are once again just under your lawn where every one of them shows.
So a sudden appearance of tunnels in September usually does not mean moles just arrived. It means moles that were already there came back within view. The same thing happens in spring for the same reason.
The Grub Misconception
This is the single most common misunderstanding, and it costs homeowners real money.
The reasoning seems sound: moles eat grubs, so kill the grubs and the moles will leave. The difficulty is that the premise is only partly true. Earthworms make up the large majority of a mole's diet, with grubs and other soil insects a smaller supplement.
Apply grub control and you remove a minor food source while leaving the main one entirely intact. In most cases the moles stay.
Worse, you may have bought a grub treatment the lawn did not need. Grub control is genuinely worthwhile when there is a damaging grub population, and that is a separate question with its own diagnosis. Buying it as mole control is buying the wrong product for the problem.
The one honest caveat is that a property with an exceptionally heavy grub population may be more attractive than a neighboring one, so reducing it can help at the margins. It is a contributing factor, not a solution.
They Are Not Rodents
Worth stating clearly because it determines what can work.
Moles are insectivores, more closely related to shrews than to mice or voles. They do not eat plant material. This has two practical consequences.
First, rodent baits are ineffective. A grain based bait is not food to an animal that eats worms and insects, so it goes untouched.
Second, moles are not eating your plants. Damage to roots and bulbs is mechanical, caused by tunneling that disturbs soil around roots and leaves air pockets that dry them out. If something is actually eating your bulbs and plant roots, that is more likely voles, which are rodents, do eat plants, and frequently use abandoned mole tunnels. The two get confused constantly, and they need completely different treatment.
Reading the Tunnels
There are two kinds and telling them apart matters for control.
Surface tunnels are the raised ridges you can see and feel. These are feeding runs, and many of them are used once and abandoned. This is why the amount of visible damage overstates the population so badly.
Deep tunnels are permanent runways connecting the nest to feeding areas, and they are used repeatedly. You cannot see them, but they are usually indicated by the soil mounds, which are the spoil pushed up from excavating below.
To find which surface tunnels are active, flatten a section with your foot and mark it. Check in a day or two. If it has been pushed back up, that run is in use. If not, it was abandoned. Treating abandoned tunnels accomplishes nothing, and this simple test is what separates effective work from wasted effort.
Tunnels along a fence line, a driveway edge, or a foundation are frequently main runways, because moles use linear features as travel corridors.
What Works and What Does Not
Trapping in correctly identified active runways is the most reliable method available, and it is what professional control generally comes down to. Success depends almost entirely on placement, which is why identifying active tunnels matters so much.
Repellents based on castor oil have some support and produce mixed results in practice. They tend to make an area less appealing rather than removing the animal, so results vary with how attractive the surrounding properties are.
The methods that do not work are worth naming, because people spend money on them every autumn. Ultrasonic spikes have not demonstrated reliable results. Chewing gum, mothballs, broken glass, and flooding tunnels with a hose are all folk remedies that generally fail and sometimes damage the lawn further. Poison gas cartridges are largely ineffective in the extensive tunnel systems moles build.
Expect this to take some persistence. Moles are territorial and a property typically holds only a few, but neighboring animals can move into vacated territory, particularly on properties bordering fields, woods, or water.
Why Your Property and Not the Neighbor's
Moles are not distributed randomly, and the properties that get them repeatedly usually have something in common.
Soil moisture is the main one. Earthworms need moist soil, and moles go where the worms are. A yard with consistent irrigation, poor drainage, or a low area that stays damp supports a far larger worm population than a dry one. In this region, where much of the ground already holds water well, an irrigation schedule set for July and never adjusted keeps the buffet open.
Soil type matters too. Loose, workable soil with good organic content is easy to tunnel through and rich in worms. Heavily compacted ground is harder work and less rewarding, which is one of the few instances where compaction is doing you a favor.
Then there is what borders you. Properties backing onto woods, fields, drainage easements, or undeveloped land have a continuous supply of animals moving in, which is why some yards need attention every year while a house three doors down never sees a tunnel.
None of this means you should stop watering your lawn. It does mean that a property with recurring mole activity and an irrigation controller still running a summer schedule in October has one lever it is not using.
Repairing the Lawn
Surface tunnels are mostly cosmetic and mechanical rather than a soil problem.
Press the ridges back down with your foot or a roller, and water afterward to settle the soil back around the roots. The real harm to grass comes from roots being lifted into air pockets and drying out, so re-establishing contact quickly is what saves the turf.
Rake mounds out rather than leaving them, since a mound smothers the grass underneath it.
Where the turf has genuinely died along a heavily worked run, September is a good time to reseed it on a fescue lawn, since you are in the seeding window anyway.
What to Do Next
Do the flattening test this week. Tread down several sections of tunnel, mark them, and check in two days. That tells you where the activity actually is, and it is the information any effective control depends on.
Check whether anything is eating plants or bulbs, which would point to voles instead and change the approach entirely.
Resist buying grub control as a mole solution unless you have separately confirmed a damaging grub population.
