Why Yellowjackets Get Aggressive in September

Short Answer: Yellowjacket colonies reach their largest size of the year in late summer and early autumn, sometimes thousands of individuals from a nest that started with a single queen in spring. At the same time their food supply shifts and shrinks, which is why they suddenly appear at your food and drinks in September when they ignored you in June. More insects, less food, and a colony to defend adds up to noticeably more aggression. Most nests around Hampton Roads are in the ground or inside wall voids, and both are genuinely risky to handle yourself, because yellowjackets sting repeatedly and recruit nestmates.
Every September the calls change. Through the summer we hear about mosquitoes. From late August onward it is stinging insects, usually because someone was mowing, or eating outside, and something went badly.
This is a predictable annual pattern rather than bad luck, and knowing why it happens tells you how to stay out of trouble.
The Annual Cycle
A yellowjacket colony is an annual enterprise. In spring, a single overwintered queen starts a nest alone, lays eggs, and raises the first small batch of workers herself. Through summer those workers take over foraging and the colony expands steadily.
By late summer the nest has reached its maximum size, which in this region can mean many hundreds to several thousand individuals depending on species and conditions. The peak of population arrives in late August and September.
At the same time the colony's purpose shifts. Instead of raising workers, it is producing next year's queens and males. The workers have far less brood to feed and, crucially, they lose the food reward they were getting from the larvae they tended.
So you have the largest number of insects of the year, all foraging, with their usual food source drying up. That is the September situation in a sentence.
Why They Suddenly Want Your Lunch
Through most of the summer, yellowjackets are predators. They hunt caterpillars, flies, and other insects to feed the developing larvae, which makes them genuinely useful in a garden. They are not interested in your sandwich.
In late season their dietary preference shifts markedly toward sugars and carbohydrates. Fallen and fermenting fruit, tree sap, soft drinks, juice, beer, and anything sweet on a picnic table become highly attractive.
They also become opportunistic scavengers, which is why they show up around outdoor bins, at barbecues, and around pet food bowls.
That is why an insect that ignored you all summer is suddenly landing on your drink in September. Nothing about your behavior changed. Their food supply did.
Yellowjackets Are Not Honey Bees
The distinction matters both for safety and because honey bees deserve protecting.
Honey bees are noticeably fuzzy, more golden brown than bright yellow, and they are almost always on flowers rather than on food and drinks. They are docile away from the hive and can sting only once. If you see a swarm clustered on a branch, that is honey bees relocating, and a beekeeper can usually collect them.
Yellowjackets are smooth and hairless, with sharply defined bright yellow and black banding, and a narrow waist. They fly with a quicker, more darting motion. Critically, they can sting repeatedly, and disturbing a nest triggers an alarm response that recruits others.
Paper wasps, also common here, build the open umbrella shaped comb you see under eaves and railings. They are generally less aggressive than yellowjackets unless the nest itself is threatened.
If you are unsure what you have, that alone is a reason not to start spraying.
Where the Nests Are
Most yellowjacket nests in this region are hidden, which is exactly why people encounter them by accident.
Ground nests are the most common and the most dangerous, often in an abandoned rodent burrow, under a shed, in a mulch bed, or at the base of a tree. The entrance may be a hole no bigger than a coin, with a steady stream of insects in and out. Mowing over one is the classic Hampton Roads September accident.
Wall voids and soffits are the other frequent location. Insects entering a gap in siding, around a vent, or at a soffit corner usually means a nest inside the structure.
Watch for traffic rather than looking for the nest itself. Stand well back in the middle of a sunny day and look for a consistent flight path converging on one point. That is far safer and more effective than searching.
Why This Is Not a DIY Job
We generally encourage people to handle what they reasonably can. This is one where we would rather you did not.
Ground nests are the main concern. A can of wasp spray delivers a limited amount of product to an opening that leads to a large colony below, and the immediate response is defensive. People get stung multiple times, frequently while retreating over uneven ground in the dark.
Nests inside walls are worse to handle badly. Spraying into a void can drive insects inward, and they emerge inside the house. Sealing the entrance without treating the colony is a serious mistake for the same reason: trapped insects chew toward the light and often end up in living space.
There is also a real medical dimension. Multiple stings are genuinely dangerous, and anyone with a known allergy should not be anywhere near this. If someone has been stung and shows difficulty breathing, swelling beyond the sting site, dizziness, or a widespread rash, that is an emergency.
Aerial nests high under eaves, and any nest near a doorway, walkway, play area, or somewhere children and pets pass, are all worth having handled properly.
The Ones That Are Not a Problem
Not every stinging insect in your yard in September warrants action, and a few are worth leaving alone.
Cicada killers alarm people every year here. They are very large wasps, up to around two inches, and the males patrol aggressively around bare sandy areas and will fly straight at you. They cannot sting at all. The females can but are docile and entirely uninterested in people, being occupied with hunting cicadas. They are solitary, they do no meaningful harm beyond small holes in bare soil, and they disappear on their own.
Mud daubers build the tubular mud nests you see under eaves and on sheds. They are solitary, notably non aggressive, and they hunt spiders, which most people would count as a benefit.
Bumblebees nest in the ground and can be mistaken for yellowjackets by location. They are large, very fuzzy, and slow moving, and they are important pollinators. Unless a nest is somewhere genuinely unavoidable, leaving them alone through the season is the better call.
The general rule is that solitary insects are far less of a concern than social ones. What makes yellowjackets dangerous is that a colony defends itself collectively.
Reducing the Attraction
Some things genuinely help through the rest of the season.
Keep outdoor bins closed and rinsed, since residue is a strong attractant. Pick up fallen fruit promptly. Keep food and drinks covered when eating outside, and be careful with open cans, since a yellowjacket inside a drink can causes a sting in the worst possible place.
Do not swat. Crushing a yellowjacket releases an alarm signal that draws others. Move away calmly instead.
Walk your property and note any hole with regular insect traffic before you mow, and check under eaves and railings before working on a ladder.
What to Do Next
Take ten minutes on a sunny afternoon, stand back, and watch for converging flight paths around your yard, shed, mulch beds, and the roofline. Mark anything you find and keep people away from it.
Do not seal any opening where you see insects entering the structure.
The good news is that these colonies die out with the first hard freezes, and the nest is not reused the following year. But that is potentially two more months away, which is a long time to share a yard with one.
