Cool Season Fertilization & Weed Control
What Is the Cool Season Grass Fertilization & Weed Control Program?
Meadow Lawn & Pest’s Cool Season Grass Fertilization & Weed Control Program is a 7-round annual treatment plan built specifically for tall fescue and fine fescue lawns throughout Hampton Roads. Cool season grasses have two active growth periods — spring and fall — and require a fundamentally different nutrition and weed control approach than warm season turf. This program combines strategically timed pre-emergent crabgrass prevention, post-emergent weed control, and customized fertilization to build a dense, healthy, weed-resistant lawn year after year. Every program starts with a complimentary soil test and lawn inspection to confirm grass type, measure pH, and identify nutrient deficiencies before a single application is made. Treatment rounds run from late January through December. Per-application pricing starts at $59.97 for lawns up to 4,000 square feet of treatable turf.
Round 1: Late January Through February
Round 1 is the most critical application of the entire year and must be timed precisely to be effective. Applied from late January through February, this round delivers an early-season nitrogen fertilization to jump-start spring growth combined with Prodiamine pre-emergent herbicide to prevent crabgrass seeds from germinating as soil temperatures approach 55 degrees. Missing or delaying Round 1 allows crabgrass to establish before the barrier is in place, compromising weed prevention for the entire season. Round 1 also includes post-emergent herbicide treatment for any winter annual weeds — such as henbit, chickweed, and hairy bittercress — already present in the lawn. Applications are scheduled based on actual soil temperature data and current weather conditions, not arbitrary calendar dates, to ensure the pre-emergent is in place before the germination window opens.
Round 2: March Through April
Round 2 is applied March through April and builds directly on the crabgrass protection established in Round 1. Prodiamine pre-emergent herbicide provides approximately 6 to 8 weeks of residual protection — which is why a second application is necessary to maintain continuous coverage through peak crabgrass germination season. Without Round 2, the barrier from Round 1 breaks down before the highest-risk germination period has passed, allowing crabgrass to push through in late spring. In addition to the second pre-emergent layer, Round 2 includes nitrogen fertilization during peak spring growth to support density and vigor, along with post-emergent herbicide treatment for broadleaf and grassy weeds that have emerged since Round 1. Timing within the March-April window varies by season based on soil temperature and current weed pressure observed during the service visit.

Rounds 3, 4 & 5: Late April Through August
Round 3, applied late April through May, transitions the program into the summer stress management phase. A slow-release nitrogen formula provides sustained feeding, while iron deepens turf color and potassium strengthens heat and drought tolerance as temperatures begin rising. Rounds 4 and 5, applied June and July through August respectively, shift focus entirely to protecting cool season grasses through Hampton Roads’ hottest months. A 5-0-30 slow-release fertilizer formula used in these rounds delivers minimal nitrogen to avoid pushing top growth during peak heat, while providing iron, magnesium, and potassium to maintain color and support photosynthesis under stress. Selective herbicide spot sprays address summer weeds that emerge. This three-round summer approach is specifically engineered to carry tall fescue and fine fescue through the most difficult months of the Hampton Roads growing season without burning or weakening the turf.
Rounds 6 & 7: October Through December
Fall is the most important growth period for cool season grasses, and Rounds 6 and 7 are designed to maximize it. Round 6, applied October through November, delivers a high-nitrogen 32-0-15 slow-release fertilizer to drive vigorous root development and build winter hardiness. Importantly, Round 6 intentionally omits herbicide treatment to protect any newly germinated seed from fall aeration and overseeding. Customers who are not overseeding may request herbicide be included in Round 6 at no additional charge. Round 7, the year’s final application running November through December, provides late-season nitrogen storage in the root system — building the nutrient reserves that fuel strong spring green-up. Post-emergent herbicide in Round 7 eliminates overwintering weeds like henbit and chickweed before they establish. Together, these two rounds set every cool season lawn up for its healthiest start in the spring.

Weed Control — What to Expect
Weed control in this program combines pre-emergent prevention with post-emergent treatment for weeds that break through. Most treated weeds show visible decline within 7 to 14 days, but certain species require the full 21 days to fully die. If weeds are still present after 21 days, call us for a complimentary re-spray — included in your program at no extra cost. Re-sprays are not performed before the 21-day mark, as this is required by federal pesticide label law. Standard program weed control covers the most common broadleaf and grassy weeds found throughout Hampton Roads. Two specialty weeds — nutsedge and dallisgrass — require separate herbicide chemistry not included in the base program and are quoted as add-on services. No program can guarantee complete elimination of all weeds due to ongoing seed pressure from neighboring properties, but consistent program adherence produces excellent long-term results for the vast majority of lawns.
Your Free Soil Test & Initial Lawn Inspection
Every new Cool Season program begins with a complimentary soil test and professional lawn inspection — completed before Round 1 so we understand exactly what your lawn needs before we treat it. Soil testing measures pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, organic matter, and micronutrient levels. Low soil pH is one of the most common and underdiagnosed reasons cool season grasses fail to thrive in Hampton Roads, and correcting it early amplifies the effectiveness of every treatment that follows. Your technician also conducts a full visual inspection to confirm grass type, evaluate weed pressure, identify bare or thin areas, and assess overall turf health. A written summary and customized treatment plan are provided before any work begins. Results are typically available within 7 to 10 business days. This baseline inspection is included at no charge for all new program customers.
Is This Program Right for My Lawn?
This program is designed exclusively for cool season grasses — primarily tall fescue and fine fescue, which are the most common lawn types throughout Hampton Roads and the Virginia Peninsula. If you’re unsure which grass type you have, your complimentary initial inspection will confirm it before any treatments begin. This program works best on established turf. For thin or bare areas, fall aeration and overseeding in September through October is strongly recommended alongside the fertilization program — fertilization feeds existing grass but cannot create new growth where grass doesn’t exist. Customers with a history of fungal disease such as brown patch or dollar spot should consider adding our Preventive Fungicide Program, which is highly recommended for Hampton Roads’ humid climate. Homeowners with warm season grasses like Bermuda or zoysia should ask about our separate Warm Season Fertilization Program instead.
