Irrigation Installation
What Is Professional Sprinkler System Installation?
A professionally installed irrigation system takes the guesswork out of watering your lawn and landscape. Instead of dragging hoses or relying on rain, an in-ground sprinkler system delivers the right amount of water to the right zones on a set schedule. Meadow Lawn & Pest designs and installs custom irrigation systems for homeowners across Hampton Roads. Our systems include all underground piping, sprinkler heads, zone valves, and a programmable controller. Every installation is sized to match your property layout, grass type, and water pressure. Whether you have a small front yard or a large multi-zone property, we build a system that fits your needs and keeps your lawn healthy all season long.
What's Included in Every Irrigation Installation
When Meadow installs your irrigation system, you get a complete, ready-to-use setup from day one. Every installation includes trenching and laying the mainline and lateral pipes, installing pop-up sprinkler heads sized for your lawn and landscape beds, setting up zone control valves to separate watering areas, and connecting a programmable timer or controller at your home. We also include a backflow preventer to protect your water supply and a rain shutoff device on most systems. After installation, we test every zone, adjust the heads for full coverage, and walk you through how to program and operate your controller. You will not need to call anyone else — Meadow handles the full installation from start to finish.
How Many Zones Does My Lawn Need?
The number of zones your property needs depends on several factors, including the total square footage of turf and landscaped areas, the layout and shape of your yard, your home’s water pressure and meter size, and whether you want to water lawn areas separately from shrub or flower bed areas. Most standard residential properties in Hampton Roads require two to four zones. A small front and back yard might need just two zones, while a larger property with side yards, beds, and a back lawn could need five or more. During your free estimate, a Meadow technician will walk your property and design a zone layout that gives you efficient, even coverage without overloading your water supply.

What to Expect on Installation Day
On installation day, our crew arrives within the scheduled window and gets right to work. We start by trenching for the mainline and lateral piping, then install all irrigation components zone by zone. Some temporary disturbance to your lawn and soil is normal and unavoidable with in-ground work. Your water may be shut off briefly while we connect to your water source. Most residential installations finish in one to three days depending on property size and system complexity. Once the work is done, we test every zone, adjust all heads for proper coverage, and walk you through how to operate the system. You do not need to be home during installation, but we recommend being available at the end for the system walkthrough.
How to Prepare Your Property Before We Arrive
A few simple steps before installation day help everything go smoothly. Most importantly, mark all private underground utilities with wire marking flags every two to three feet. This includes invisible dog fence wires, landscape lighting wires, drainage pipes, septic lines, and well lines. We will contact Miss Utility, call 811, to have public utilities marked, but we are not responsible for damage to any unmarked private underground features. You should also unlock all gates, move vehicles and lawn furniture out of work areas, and secure pets indoors for the day. Clear pathways from your driveway to all work zones. Identify where you want the controller installed and locate your outdoor water source connection point so our team can plan the hookup efficiently.

Our Warranty — What's Covered and for How Long
Meadow stands behind every irrigation system we install. All installations come with a one-year warranty on labor and installation workmanship. If anything we installed fails or was not set up correctly, we will come back and fix it at no charge within that first year. In addition, the controller and sprinkler heads carry a two-year manufacturer warranty covering defects in the equipment itself. These warranties do not cover damage from freezing, which is why we strongly recommend annual winterization, or damage caused by lawn mowing, digging, vehicles, or other outside forces. If something goes wrong after your warranty period, Meadow also offers repair services so you always have a local team to call.
Winterization — Protecting Your System from Freeze Damage
Hampton Roads winters are mild compared to much of the country, but temperatures do drop below freezing, and any water left sitting in your irrigation pipes can expand and crack the lines or fittings. Winterization means using compressed air to blow all water out of your system before the first hard freeze. Meadow offers irrigation winterization as a separate seasonal service. We strongly recommend scheduling it each fall, typically between late October and early December. In the spring, we offer a system startup service to restore water flow, check for any winter damage, test all zones, and adjust head positions after any settling or shifting. Keeping up with winterization and spring startup protects your investment and extends the life of your system.
Smart Controller and Rain Sensor Upgrades
Your base irrigation system comes with a standard programmable timer, but Meadow also offers upgrades that can save water and reduce your utility bill. A rain sensor is the most popular add-on, priced between $75 and $150 depending on the model. It attaches to your controller and automatically skips a scheduled watering cycle when it detects recent rainfall, so your lawn is never overwatered after a storm. For homeowners who want even more control, we also offer smart Wi-Fi controllers that connect to local weather data and allow you to adjust your system schedule from your smartphone. Smart controllers can significantly reduce water waste by watering only when conditions call for it, making them a smart long-term investment for most properties.
