What Are Grubs and Why Do They Damage Your Lawn?

Grubs are the larval stage of beetles like Japanese beetles, June bugs, and masked chafers. These C-shaped white larvae live just below the soil surface and feed on grass roots. When grub populations get high enough, they sever roots faster than your lawn can recover. You may notice brown patches that peel back like a loose carpet — a telltale sign of heavy grub activity. Beyond direct feeding damage, grubs attract animals like moles, skunks, and raccoons that dig through your yard searching for a meal. A proactive grub control program protects your lawn before visible damage appears, saving you from costly repairs down the road.

Our Two-Application Program for Complete Protection

One application is not enough to fully protect your lawn. Our two-application grub control program targets grubs at two critical life stages throughout the year. The first application goes down in spring to control overwintered grubs and reduce adult beetle emergence. The second application follows in late summer, targeting newly hatched grubs before they grow large enough to cause serious damage. Together, these two treatments provide season-long protection and begin reducing grub populations cumulatively over time. Customers who complete both applications each year typically see the greatest results by year two or three of the program.

Spring Application — Round One

Our spring round targets third-instar grubs that survived winter in the soil. These older, larger grubs are harder to control with many products — but our professional-grade treatment is effective against them. Applying in spring also helps reduce the number of adult beetles that emerge and lay eggs later in the season, breaking the cycle before it starts. Early-season root protection keeps your lawn growing strong through the heat of summer. We time this application carefully based on regional soil temperatures and pest activity, ensuring maximum effectiveness when grubs are most vulnerable.

Late Summer Application — Round Two

Newly hatched grubs appear in late summer, usually in August. These first- and second-instar larvae are small and feeding actively near the soil surface — which makes them highly vulnerable to treatment. Our second application targets this new generation before they establish deep in the soil and begin causing root damage. Treating at this stage gives the product time to move into the root zone, where it remains active through fall. Without this application, a new crop of grubs goes untreated and can cause significant turf damage as temperatures cool and they feed aggressively before going dormant.

Acelepryn® G — Professional-Grade Grub Protection

We use Acelepryn® G, a professional granular insecticide trusted by lawn care experts across the country. It provides up to four months of residual activity, meaning one application keeps working long after it has been watered in. It is absorbed systemically into the root zone, putting protection exactly where grubs feed. Unlike older insecticides, Acelepryn® G has minimal impact on beneficial insects like bees and earthworms when used as directed. Once the treated area has dried after watering, it is safe for your family and pets. This professional-grade product is not available at retail — only licensed applicators can use it.

What's Included in Every Service Visit

Every grub control visit includes a pre-service inspection to assess turf conditions and grub activity. Our technician uses calibrated, properly maintained equipment to ensure a uniform, even application across your entire turf area. After applying, we will leave detailed watering instructions so you know exactly what to do to activate the product. You will also receive a door hanger confirming the service was completed and what was applied. If you have questions afterward, we offer a follow-up consultation at no additional charge. We treat your property with care and professionalism on every visit and leave your lawn in the best possible condition.

What Grub Control Does — and Doesn't — Cover

Our grub control program is specifically designed to target white grub larvae beneath the soil surface. It does not cover surface-feeding insects like chinch bugs or armyworms, adult beetles, turf diseases, or non-turf areas such as planting beds. If moles, skunks, or raccoons have been digging in your yard, reducing grub populations often reduces that animal activity — but this is not guaranteed. Animal damage to turf is not covered under this program. If you are dealing with other pest or turf issues alongside grubs, ask us about additional services. We will help you identify the right combination of treatments for your specific situation.

Safety Information for Your Family and Pets

Acelepryn® G is one of the safest professional insecticides available for residential use. Once applied and watered in, the granules dissolve into the soil. After the treated area has dried — typically one to four hours — it is safe for children and pets to re-enter the lawn. To activate the product and move it into the root zone, water your lawn with at least half an inch of water within 24 hours of application. Because it is a granular product, there are no mowing restrictions after treatment. Following these simple steps ensures the product works as intended while keeping your household safe. We are happy to answer any safety questions before, during, or after your service.
