Why Fresh Mulch Makes a Difference

Fresh mulch does more than just look good — it works hard for your landscape. A proper 2 to 3 inch layer retains soil moisture, moderates soil temperature during summer heat and winter cold, and suppresses weed growth by blocking light from reaching the soil. As it slowly breaks down, it adds organic matter that improves soil quality over time. Beyond the functional benefits, fresh mulch dramatically enhances curb appeal. It gives landscape beds a clean, finished appearance that ties together your plantings and makes your entire property look polished and well-maintained. For homeowners preparing to sell, fresh mulch is one of the highest-return investments in pre-sale preparation.

What Our Mulch Installation Includes

Our mulch installation service covers everything from delivery to final cleanup. We deliver your selected mulch directly to your property and have our trained crew spread it evenly throughout all designated landscape beds, tree rings, and planting areas. Mulch is installed at the proper depth of 2 to 3 inches and finished with clean, defined edges for a professional appearance. We maintain the correct 2 to 3 inch clearance from tree trunks and shrub stems to prevent rot and avoid harmful mulch volcano buildup. Once installation is complete, all driveways, sidewalks, patios, and pathways are blown or swept clean of any mulch debris. You receive a final walkthrough before we leave.

Mulch Types — Choose Your Color and Style

We offer premium bulk mulch in several varieties to match your landscape style. Double Shredded Dyed Hardwood is available in Walnut (rich brown with golden undertones — the most popular choice), Black (deep, dramatic contrast with plants and flowers), and Red (vibrant, classic landscaping color). Double Shredded Natural Hardwood offers an undyed, organic appearance that ages to a silvery-gray over time — ideal for woodland settings and natural gardens. For maximum longevity, Cypress Hardwood Mulch contains natural insect-repellent properties, resists decomposition better than standard hardwood, and lasts 18 to 24 months. During your estimate, we can show color samples to help you choose.

The Right Depth Matters for Plant Health

Mulch depth is not just a cosmetic detail — it directly affects your plants and the effectiveness of the installation. We follow the industry standard of 2 to 3 inches, which provides optimal weed suppression, moisture retention, and visual appeal. Too little mulch offers minimal benefits and allows weeds to push through. Too much — anything over 4 inches — can suffocate plant roots, promote disease, and encourage stem rot. One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is piling mulch against tree trunks, creating what is called a mulch volcano. We always maintain proper clearance from trunks and stems on every installation to protect the long-term health of your trees and shrubs.

New Installation vs. Annual Refresh

Most of our mulch installations are annual refreshes, also called top-dressing. This means we apply new mulch over your existing material that has partially decomposed — it is the most common and cost-effective approach. Mulch naturally breaks down into soil over 12 to 18 months, losing color, depth, and weed-suppressing effectiveness. Annual refreshing restores proper depth and vibrant color before those benefits are fully lost. If your beds have excessive old mulch buildup, heavily decomposed material that has turned to soil, or you want a complete bed renewal, we can quote old mulch removal as a separate service. We will let you know what we recommend after assessing your beds during the estimate.

When Is the Best Time to Mulch?

Mulch installation is available year-round, and every season has its advantages. Spring (March through May) is the most popular time — fresh mulch prepares beds for the growing season, retains moisture for new plant growth, and makes a strong first impression when your landscape is at its most visible. Summer installations provide immediate moisture protection from heat stress. Fall mulching insulates roots for winter and prepares beds for the cold months ahead. Winter installations offer excellent scheduling flexibility. Spring demand is highest, so scheduling early is recommended to secure your preferred installation window. Most customers plan their installation 2 to 3 weeks in advance during peak spring season.

How to Prepare for Your Installation

A little preparation before our crew arrives helps ensure a smooth, efficient installation. Make sure all gates are unlocked and landscape beds are accessible. Secure pets indoors or in a fenced area away from work zones. Remove heavy debris such as leaves, sticks, or equipment from beds — if more than 30 percent of a bed is covered, we will need to reschedule until it is cleared. If you have in-ground irrigation, mark or identify sprinkler heads before our visit, as we are not responsible for locating or protecting unmarked components. Point out any newly planted flowers or fragile ground covers so our crew can take extra care in those areas. We notify you the night before and day-of when the crew is en route.

What Mulch Installation Does — and Doesn't — Cover

Our mulch installation service focuses exclusively on delivery, spreading, and cleanup. It does not include weed removal or pre-emergent herbicide applications — if your beds have existing weed pressure, we recommend scheduling our Landscape Bed Weed Control Program before mulch installation for best results. Bed edging, border reshaping, plant pruning, soil amendment, and grading are also not part of this service and must be quoted separately. Standard installation is performed as top-dressing over existing mulch; complete removal of old mulch requires a separate quote. While mulch naturally suppresses some weed growth, we do not guarantee complete weed prevention, as environmental factors and neighboring seed pressure can still allow some weeds to emerge.
